Welcome to the paulownia.wbs.cz
Greetings. If you are here now, it means that you are also, like me, interested in these special plants shrouded in mystery. The name of this genus of plants from Asia emerged in the last few years and you can to hear about it more and more. From childhood I´m trying to grow all sorts of plants, especially the exotic and then especially those species, which people don´t have at home . For example I have my little growing room of pineapples, they produces pineapples every year. Certainly you can not buy pineapples like these in the shops. But back to the genus Paulownia ... It attracted me immediately. It´s appearance, leaf size, the beauty of flowers, rapid growth, exoticism and it´s use ... all inspired me and I fell into cultivation. I tried the seeds of Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia fortunei from some eShops. True, some of them germinated and grow quite well. But I am much more interested in offering more resistant species or hybrids ...
I focused on growing the species Paulownia kirl, which is characterized by high frost resistance. My Paulownia grown the first year of a maximum height of 1.3 meters and the leaves were almost 50 cm wide. Probably they would have grown even more, but the seeds I sowed quite late - in the middle of March, and also in September this year was pretty cold, so additions at the end of the growing period were smaller. We see the next year.

Growing Paulownias
The first year seedlings need more water, the deficiency can cause droopy leaves. We bet them to good aerated soil with a little compost or manure. The best are south, southeast or southwest exposure places protected from the wind. In the autumn after leaf fall is good cut the tree about 5-10 cm above the ground and cover. Survive the first winter is very important. Although kirl survives low temperatures, it must be acclimated and trunk must be strong enough, which it isn´t in the first year. In the case of shearing (recommended) then in the spring grow new and stronger stems, because the root system is strong from the first year. Very good is also let Paulownias in larger containers in a greenhouse in the first year, where they will be protected from the frosts and freezing wind and they will be aclimated. Over the winter watering is minimal, just so that the plant is not dried. If you want to do a proper trunk, then it is important to remove sprouts and lower branches to a height of about 2-3 meters. Seedlings origin is in China, where the trees grow and where winter temperatures can reach up to -28 ° C, so it is hardy. It grows in variety soil types. However, if there will be a sufficient supply of minerals and nutrients in the soil after planting, it will form roots better and will grow faster, leaves will be much bigger, too. Fertilization is recommended for faster root development and preparation for the winter.
